RealNetworks, Inc. announced today it has sued the Microsoft Corporation for violations of federal and state antitrust laws. Robert Margouleff on the state of audio surround sound

Don’t get Robert Margouleff started on the subject of competing audio surround sound formats. Speaking on a panel entitled "The Future Of Surround" at the Surround Conference in Los Angeles Dec. 12, the pioneering producer/engineer/mixer warned in advance that if asked what he thought of the market battles being waged between formats such as DVD-A and SACD, he would probably start waving his arms and flip out. Undeterred, panel moderator Bobby Owskinski asked anyway.

Features to Burn
Ahead Software’s Nero 6: Ultra Edition

Some software programs are like all-you-can-eat buffets. Their main selling point is quantity rather than quality. If you’re lucky, the quality will be good enough. And if that’s the case, you’ll probably be content with the results. That’s certainly the case with Ahead Software’s affordable Nero 6: Ultra Edition ($99.99). It may take you the better part of a day to explore all twelve programs in this loosely integrated suite. The centerpiece of the package is an updated version of the popular Nero CD/DVD authoring program, with the 11 other programs branching out from there. Many of the programs involve writing data to a CD or DVD, and many involve manipulating audio or video files in some way. It’s an unusual mix—and you may already own software that performs some of the functions—yet it’s hard to argue against the overall value of the package. The company bills Nero 6: Ultra Edition as the “ultimate CD/DVD burning suite.” It’s a fair appraisal, at least until something better comes along.
